Can an oud ship safely from Türkiye to Syria?

With a hard case, padding, a protective carton and condition photos before closing, breakage risk drops considerably.

Why does shipping an oud cost more than its weight suggests?

The case and carton make the volume large, so dimensional weight is charged.

What should I do when the instrument arrives?

Open it in a moderate room and let it acclimatize to temperature and humidity before tuning and playing.

Turkish Ouds, Darbukas and Saz for Syria

To buy an oud, darbuka or saz from Türkiye for Syria, ask the shop or workshop for the instrument’s specifications: wood or body material, neck length or head size, string type and whether a case is included. Wooden instruments are sensitive to impact, humidity and heat, so ask for a hard case and extra protective packing, photos of condition before closing, and a shipping estimate after packing because the volume is large.

Specifications to request

For an oud, ask about top and back wood, neck length, tuning pegs and strings; for a darbuka, body material, head type and size; for a saz, neck length and strings. Ask for photos of the actual instrument rather than catalog images, especially for handmade pieces where every instrument differs.

Protecting the instrument in shipping

Ask for a hard case for an oud or saz, slightly slacken the strings before packing as the maker advises, and add padding so the instrument cannot move inside the case, then a protective carton outside. Metal darbukas are less sensitive, but the head needs protection from pressure and puncture.

Why heat and humidity matter

Wood expands and contracts with heat and humidity, and the top may crack or the neck setup may shift after sharp changes. Open the case in a moderate room after delivery and let the instrument acclimatize before tuning and playing, and never leave it in a car or hot place.

Plan cost and delivery

Published reference prices for shipping to Syria depend on region and carton size, and an oud in a hard case with a protective carton may need a large carton; the price is confirmed after measurement. Keep the invoice and condition photos taken before closing, and write the address with the city, area and a nearby landmark and an active phone number.
