How a darbuka reaches Syria

The load crosses by land in about two weeks and is handed over in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and Hama. On arrival open the carton, tap the head and check the rim and the seam, and photograph any crack or dent before you sign.

Size and a reference price

A darbuka is light but wide, so volume rules over weight. The medium carton (60×40×40 cm, up to 15 kg) has a reference price of 15 to 20 US dollars by region, customs excluded, and a clay darbuka needs more padding, so count it on its own.

Material and sound

Hammered aluminium gives a sharp clear sound, copper is heavier and richer, and clay is warm but brittle on the road. A synthetic head holds better through heat and humidity. Syria may apply charges by value and quantity, and bands and commercial quantities are priced separately.

Material and head before ordering

A darbuka is chosen by its body material and then by its head: hammered aluminium is lighter and sturdier for travel, copper is heavier with a richer sound, and clay is traditional but brittle. A synthetic head holds up better than natural skin through changes of heat and humidity, so state the material and head diameter clearly in the order and ask for a padded carry bag.

Transit, delivery and price by country

Syria: the darbuka arrives by land after about two weeks in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and Hama, wrapped in layers that protect the head and the rim. Jordan: land suits Amman, Irbid and Zarqa, and a frame drum or bendir can share the carton with the darbuka. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman: air from Istanbul suits a single small piece, and a large darbuka is billed by volume rather than weight. Charges may apply in each country by value and quantity, and bands and shops get a separate quote.
