Honey weighs about 1.4 kg a litre, so an 850 g jar is roughly 1.2 kg with glass and lid. Ten jars are about 12 kg, nearly the 15 kg limit of a medium carton, while 20 jars need the large carton (up to 30 kg). Work out cost per jar by dividing the carton rate by the number of jars, and compare it with the price of the honey itself.
Glass, plastic or tin on a rough land road
The route to Syria is long and parcels are handled several times, so glass is the breakable part. If the same honey is sold in a plastic tub or tin, it weighs less and survives better; if you want glass, ask for each jar wrapped in a sealed bag with padding between jars so one break does not soak the carton.
Reading the Turkish label and honey names
Çiçek balı is flower honey, Çam balı pine honey, Kestane balı chestnut honey, Süzme bal strained honey and Petek bal comb honey. Look for Net miktar (net amount), Üretici (producer), Parti no (batch) and Son tüketim tarihi (best-before date), and ask us to photograph the label so you can check the producer name and the date.
Winter, crystallising and what to confirm first
Honey often crystallises in cold weather, which is normal and not a sign of spoilage; warm the jar in warm, not hot, water. Food is checked on arrival, so ask in writing whether it is accepted on the land line and in what quantity, keep the invoice, and order an amount that suits personal use because large quantities can be treated as commercial goods.
