What matters when shipping Turkish pickles
Pickles are heavy because the liquid is half the weight, and any leak ruins the rest of the parcel, so safe packing matters more than saving on the carton.
Jars and packing
Choose jars with tight lids or heat-sealed plastic packs, as they are less likely to leak in transit. Keep pickles in the fridge after opening, and check the expiry date on each pack.
Vinegar pickles or brined pickles
Vinegar pickles are sharply sour and last long, while brine-fermented pickles taste milder, contain friendly bacteria and may need cold storage. Read the label to learn the pickling method, and note if the pickle must be refrigerated after opening.
Brine and jar
Pickles are shipped in their liquid, so choose a jar with a tight lid or a heat-sealed plastic pack, and put it in a leak-proof bag inside the carton. Check that the quantity is weighed net rather than with the liquid so you know the true parcel weight.
Half the weight is liquid
A jar of pickles carries liquid equal to roughly half its weight, so use the gross weight when estimating shipping. For a large family order medium packs instead of one huge jar, since frequent opening weakens the taste.
