What matters when shipping cutting boards

Cutting boards are heavy and flat and often need a carton of their own, so it pays to put several boards of the same size in one parcel.

Olive wood and care

Turkish olive wood boards are sturdy and handsome for serving; oil them occasionally with food-safe oil and never put them in the dishwasher. Colour-coded plastic boards keep meat and vegetables apart and wash easily.

Wood, plastic and bamboo

Olive wood is beautiful and sturdy for serving, bamboo is light and water resistant, and coloured plastic separates meat from vegetables and washes easily. Choose a thickness that takes heavy cutting without bending.

Care and warping

A wooden board is oiled with a food-safe oil and is not washed in the dishwasher so it does not crack. Check for rubber feet that stop it slipping, and a juice groove if you will cut meat or fruit.

Damp and weight

Wooden boards are heavy and sensitive to damp, so ask for a water-resistant film and let them dry on arrival. One large board often needs its own carton because of its size.
