How calligraphy pens reach Syria

They travel by land for about two weeks after the shipment leaves and are delivered in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and Hama. Open the parcel on arrival and check the ink cap and the pen tips for breakage, and photograph any leak before you sign.

Light items, but ink needs sealing

Pens are light and small so they hardly add to the parcel weight, while liquid ink needs a tight seal. A medium carton (60×40×40 cm, up to 15 kg) with a reference price of 15 to 20 US dollars by region, customs excluded, holds pens, paper and notebooks together, so combine them in one parcel.

Pen and ink

Turkey has one of the oldest schools of Arabic calligraphy, with selected reed pens and traditional inks. Pick pen width by script, as thuluth needs a wider pen than naskh, and beginners start with a multi-size set. Charges may apply in Syria by value and quantity, and commercial quantities need a separate quote.

Nib width and material before ordering

A calligraphy pen is chosen by its script: reed, bamboo or metal nib, so read the nib width in millimetres and how it is cut, make sure the liquid-ink cap seals tightly and that a beginner set holds more than one size, and try the pen on burnished paper as soon as it arrives.

Transit, delivery and price by country

Syria: calligraphy pens arrive by land after about two weeks in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and Hama, and they are light, so combine them with paper and notebooks in one parcel and wrap ink bottles to prevent leaks. Jordan: land suits Amman and Irbid, and liquid inks are packed alone in a sealed bag. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman: air from Istanbul suits their light weight, but some air carriers restrict liquids, so ask about the inks before sending. Charges may apply in each country by value and quantity, and shops get a separate quote.
